1. Christianity:

Christianity is the largest religion, with more than 2 billion followers. It is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and is approximately 2000 years old. Its largest groups are the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox churches, and the Protestant churches. Its sacred text is the Bible. Over the centuries, Christianity has grown in numbers as it spread around the world through colonizers and missionaries

 

2. Islam:

The second most widely practiced religion is Islam, with an estimated 1.8 billion followers worldwide. It originated in the city of Mecca in modern-day Saudi Arabia in the 7th century. It is said to have been spread by the Prophet Mohammed, and followers of Islam believe him to be God's ultimate prophet. Islam states that the teachings of God, known as Allah, were written down in our holy book known as the Quran, which is the faith's spiritual text. Most Muslims belong to one of the two major branches of Islam: Sunni, which includes approximately 80% of Muslims, and Shiite, which includes approximately 15%. The remaining numbers belong to smaller denominations.

 

3.Hinduism:

The world's third-largest and one of the oldest religions is Hinduism, with an estimated 1.1 billion followers. Its beliefs or practices date back at least as far as 1500 CE. Hinduism is primarily practiced in India, where approximately 80% of the population identifies as Hindu, as well as in Nepal and Indonesia. Little is known about the founding of Hinduism, but its teachings deeply influence almost all aspects of believers' lives. In recent years, certain aspects of Hinduism have become popular in the West, such as the practice of yoga and the use of chakras, energy points found throughout the body, to identify and treat illness.

 

4. Buddhism:

The fourth most widely practiced religion is Buddhism, with approximately 500 million followers worldwide, and more than 250 million in China alone. Based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha, the religion was founded in India nearly 2500 years ago. There are two main branches of Buddhism: Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism. Tenets of Buddhism include nonviolence and adherence to ethical behavior in all aspects of life.

 

5. Shinto:

The fifth largest religion in the world is Shinto, with around 104 million followers. This religion was formally established in Japan in the 8th century. Shinto promotes the existence of many gods. It is not an organized religion in the traditional sense, but it serves as the foundation of many cultural practices in Japan.

 

6. Sikhism:

The sixth largest religion in the world is Sikhism, with around 25,000,000 followers. This religion is relatively new compared to many other faiths. Sikhism was founded in India in the 1500s CE and is based on the teachings of Guru Nanak and his nine successors.

 

7. Judaism:

The seventh largest religion in the world is Judaism, with around 14,000,000 followers. Judaism is the ancient religion of the Jewish people, a 3000-year-old tradition that traces its roots back to the patriarch Abraham, making it the cornerstone religion for the Abrahamic traditions of Christianity and Islam. Although the global Jewish population is relatively small at 14,000,000, its impact on world civilization is profound and significant. Jews self-identify with one of four different schools of thought: Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, or Reconstructionist, but there is tremendous diversity of thought and opinion within each of those schools. The holiest text for Jews is the Hebrew Bible or Tanakh, also known as Miqra, which is the canonical collection of Hebrew scriptures. Emphasis from the tradition is placed on the first five books of the Torah.

 

8. Taoism or Daoism:

The eighth largest religion is Taoism or Daoism, with around 12 million followers. This religion originated in China more than 2000 years ago. It centers on living in harmony with the spontaneous fluctuations of nature. Among its first philosophers was a man named Laozi, who is believed to have authored the Daodejing, a primary Daoist writing.

 

9. Muism:

The ninth largest religion in the world is Muism, with around 10 million followers. This is one of the world's religions closely associated with traditional Korean culture and history. It is also known as Korean shamanism, and its followers claim a strong belief in the spiritual world.

 

10. Cao Dai:

The 10th largest religion in the world is Cao Dai, with around 4.4 million followers. This religion originated in Vietnam in 1926. Cao Dai was established by Ngo Van Chieu, who claimed to have received a message from a God figure known as the Supreme Being during a séance. The religion incorporates elements of many other faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, and Daoism. This religion promotes love, peace, and tolerance.
